AN ex-serviceman has been banned from the wheel for driving while almost twice the legal limit.
Allan Haampu, of St Paul's Place, Darlington, was stopped by officers who saw him speeding along Landsdowne Street in Darlington.
The 23-year-old, who until recently had served in the army for four years, was arrested and a breath test showed he had 64 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit being 35.
Ben Pegman, mitigating at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court today (September 15), said the defendant had been drinking earlier in the day.
Haampu admitted the charge and was fined £120, disqualified from driving for 17 months and was ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
He was offered the drink driver's rehabilitation course which would reduce his ban by 17 weeks.
