TRAFFIC detectives are keeping their fellow pupils safe at a primary school in Darlington.

A group of youngsters from St Augustine’s Academy are working to highlight the dangers of parking around schools.

On Friday, St Augustine’s Traffic Detectives met Darlington councillor Cyndi Hughes.

Year five and six pupils Lily Large, Carmen Del-Zotto-Ascaso, Sofia Vassilounis, Lee Robinson, Hannah Board and Nat Bell visited Darlington Town Hall to give a presentation.

The group have petitioned parents on the dangers of parking and are encouraging their peers to walk, cycle or ‘park and stride’ to school.

Carmen, 11, said: “We’ve given a school assembly and wanted to show our presentation to Cyndi so she can spread the message for us.

“Some people could get hurt if parents aren’t careful parking around the roads and it’s healthier to cycle to school or walk.

“We need to encourage people to park far away so they’re not putting us in danger or affecting residents by taking up their spaces.”
