THE granddaughter of a legendary North-East biker is carrying on his fundraising legacy, months after putting off a charitable trip of a lifetime because of his death.

Sascha-J Preston, whose grandfather is Jungle, formerly the head of the Darlington’s Hell’s Angels, is embarking on an adventure to Borneo alongside fellow students Zak and Elias.

The trio departed Darlington station on Wednesday to begin their journey which will see them carry out reforestation work, as well as helping with building schools and installing toilets and fresh water supplies.

They will also be taking part in a five day trek in the Borneo jungle to work with endangered orangutans.

Sascha-J’s mother, Nichola Preston, said: “Sascha said months ago and a few times since that she always planned to come home and sit and tell him all about it with real photos she’d get printed, but said now it feels like he’ll be going with her.

“They were very close and had a very special relationship.”

The 19-year-old, who is looking to embark on a career in the RAF, had previously decided against the trip because of Jungle’s death last year, but has since raised the £4,000 needed to take part in the expedition.

She raised almost half of the money needed with a 15,000ft sky dive, and also received help from the Costa Foundation, as well as her family and close friends of Jungle.

“He (Jungle) was the best friend she had ever had in her whole life. He would have been with her now helping her to get organised over the last couple of weeks, and would have been fussing over her to make sure she was okay.

“He’d have made sure, as he always did, she knew how proud he was of her, how many photos he wanted her to take, how to make sure she enjoys it all, and make sure she notices everything going on and listens to all the noises of a different place.”

The trip has been provided by Camps International, who provide expeditions that allow students to take part in social and environmental project work in areas that need it most.

“Jungle always encouraged planting trees, so he would be very proud of Sascha going on the trip.

“The project is called Borneo Experience – Jungle, which made the whole thing almost seem like it was supposed to happen” Ms Preston added.
