MP Jenny Chapman donned a hard hat and hi-vis jacket to mark the ground-breaking of new retirement development on Carmel Road North in Darlington.

Designed exclusively for people aged 55 and over, the development will comprise 35 one and two bedroom apartments, which will be made available to buy off plan from early 2017.

The Darlington MP was joined by Don Ives, site manager for Ortus Homes, along with area sales manager, David Meacham, to officially mark the start of construction.

Ms Chapman said: “It is pleasing that the design has stayed in keeping with the architecture and character of the local area, as well as being sited just five minutes’ drive from the town centre so that the new homeowners can easily access local shops and make the most of the well-equipped high street.”

The apartments are aimed at older people wishing to downsize and should help free up other family homes in the town.
