SCORES of visitors to Darlington could be banged up in cells this weekend.

Those attending this Sunday’s emergency services open weekend will experience life behind bars courtesy of Darlington Police who are opening their custody suite to visitors on June 25 and 26.

Officers will lead visitors on the unusual tour as part of a family fun day that will see police, fire and ambulance representatives come together to give an insight into their working lives.

The joint open day – running at Darlington’s fire, police and ambulance stations – will feature a host of events and activities between 10am and 4pm.

Those attending can enjoy police taser and chip pan fire demonstrations as well as opportunities to meet and great firearms officers and police interceptors.

The fire service will show off their rescue boat and tell visitors how they conduct fore investigations and safety checks.

Over 3000 onlookers attended the free event last year and Phil Innis, district manager for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We’re looking forward to building on the success of last year’s event and providing a fun day, where members of the public can see the professionalism of fire, police and ambulance services working together to make Darlington a safer place.”

Inspector Caroline Dawson of Darlington Police added: “Activities are run across both sites, throughout both days; it’s a real family fun weekend and is lots of fun. It gives a real opportunity for the public to meet all the staff at the services and the vehicles involved.”
