A GROUP of cyclists have raised more than £5,000 for a cancer charity in memory of a friend who died from the disease.

The 15 riders took part in a two-day challenge, pedalling from Morecambe to Saltburn to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK.

The challenge was prompted by the death of their friend and work colleague Ian Watson who died from pancreatic cancer.

The riders left Morecambe on Saturday, May 14 and reached their overnight destination of Barnard Castle, before travelling through Darlington, Hutton Rudby, Stokesley and Guisborough the following day.

On the Sunday leg of the journey, the group were joined by six riders from the Cummins Darlington Engine Plant who were colleagues of Mr Watson.

Steve Clapham, who took part in the challenge, said: “Our arrival at Saltburn was an impressive sight.

“We had 21 riders who all made it to the end, most smiling but all absolutely delighted at our combined efforts.

“All riders agree that we had a great weekend. We had some fun but more importantly we all did this in memory of Ian.

“Knowing the overwhelming amount of money contributed has made our pain and efforts worthwhile.”
