PEOPLE of Darlington are being asked to join efforts to help raise money for desperate refugee families coming to the area.

A 17-mile walk organised by the Darlington Constituency Labour Party (CLP) will take place on Saturday (October 3), to raise sponsor money for ten refugee families that Darlington Borough Council has agreed to house.

Bob Carson, secretary of the CLP, said: "I think most people have seen the terrible situations of people escaping from war zones. It’s a normal human response to want to help.

“This situation has gone on for quite a long time. Anyone who’s seen pictures realises how desperate these people are.”

The walk, which was first discussed in spring, will head clockwise from Broken Scar picnic area, in Coniscliffe Road, with several stopping points where walkers are free to join and leave as they wish.

Cllr Carson added: “The walk is organised in sections so people can do 3 or 4 miles at a time, then more people can get involved."

Darlington MP Jenny Chapman will also be participating in the walk, as well as other members of Labour party.

Those interested should register with Cllr Carson, stating where they wish to join or leave the walk.
