DOGS Trust Darlington is hoping National Grandparents Day this Sunday will prove a lucky day for its aged pooches.

Staff at the Sadberge rehoming centre are desperate to see two older dogs, Duffy and Aska, find their forever homes.

Eight-year-old collie cross, Duffy, arrived at the centre two-and-a-half years ago and Akita Aska, who is also eight, found herself without a home last year.

Both have seen hundreds of their four-legged friends of all ages head off with their new families, but these two golden oldies are still waiting.

Rebecca McKeown, supporter relations officer, said: “It is especially sad when older dogs come into the centre.

“Because of their age our golden oldies often spend a long time waiting for a new family, but there are so many advantages of having an older dog.

“They are often calmer, need less exercise, they’re usually house trained and when you rehome an older dog, what you see is what you get.

“Their personalities have already been shaped so there should be no surprises.”

The team say Duffy does not like to be left alone so they want to find him a quiet adult-only home with company most of the time.

He gets on well with other dogs and could potentially live with another pooch.

Aska is a football loving, playful Akita who is intelligent and strong-willed so experienced Akita owners would be her ideal family.

She is happy around dogs but would be best as the only dog in the home as she does not like to share her toys.

She walks well on the lead and could live with a family with older teenagers.
