A week after telling four of his players they were no longer needed, Dave Penney's Darlington revolution continued yesterday when he released two more of his ever-diminishing squad.

Last Saturday, The Northern Echo revealed that Brian Close, Darren Holloway, Craig James and Simon Johnson were on their way out and now Carlos Logan and Kalu Ngoma have been told they are also surplus to requirements.

Their exists take the number of players to have left the club since Penney's appointment last October to 14. The others to have been shown the door are Joey Hutchinson, David Duke, Alex Janes, Anthony Peacock, Barry Conlon, Richard Logan, Phil Stamp and Ville Vaisanen.

In his time in charge Penney has signed 14 players, but many have been on loan and some of those involved at home to Stockport County tomorrow, such as David Rowson, Neil Wainwright and David Stockdale are also out of contract.

Although Penney has rapidly downsized his squad over the last week, the boss aims to quickly strengthen with a raft of summer signings.

His aim is to have a smaller but stronger squad at his disposal next season and Penney aims to have completed his recruitment drive by the time players begin pre-season training on July 2.

He wants all his summer signings completed by the time the proposed trip to China which is to include three friendlies.

He said: "I hope to have everyone I want at the club when we come back for pre-season.

"There might be one or two places in the squad after then in case, for example, someone I want becomes available at the last minute, or I could have one or two on trial.

"But I hope I've got at least 95 per cent of the squad here by July 2.

"The good thing if we do that is that, when we go to China the week away would give everyone time to get to know each other."

Stockport are expected to be backed by around 2,000 fans tomorrow as they bid to end the season in the play-offs having dropped out last week after their 0-0 draw at Bury.

The eighth-placed Hatters need to better Bristol Rovers' result at Hartlepool if they are to reach the play-offs and have already sold 1,500 tickets.

* Quakers plan to send their first-team squad for a pre-season friendly at Darlington RA in July.
