AN octogenarian has thanked members of the public who came to his aid after he suffered a fall in the street.

Lewis Stockill, 83, hurt his neck, back and shoulder after falling in Chancery Lane, Darlington, at about 12.30pm on August 14.

He said: "I was immediately surrounded by caring, comforting ladies and gentlemen, who quickly ascertained I was not seriously injured, and helped me to stand up and recover my balance.

"I would like to thank everyone for the comfort they gave me. Many, many thanks to everyone.

"Also, one gentleman who returned a pound coin I had dropped from my pocket.

"Another gentleman who walked with me until I recovered my balance – thank you everyone.

"Although in my dazed condition, I can not remember faces, I shall always remember those kind Darlington people."

Mr Stockill is now retired and used to work in material and supply for Darlington-based engine firm Cummins.

He added: "I go to the hospital gym twice a week and after I fell, I could feel that I had banged my neck and shoulders.

"I was dazed and am still a bit bruised, but everyone was very kind in helping me.

"There was nothing I could have grabbed hold of to prevent myself from falling."
