AMATEUR historians can get involved in the creation of a major online history resource by attending a workshop this week.

Experts from Durham County Record Office and the Centre for Local Studies at Darlington’s Crown Street Library will lead a research session for the Durham at War website on Tuesday, May 19.

The website aims to map the impact of the First World War on people across the North-East, providing access to thousands of original documents, objects and real-life stories.

The workshop, which runs from 10am to noon, will look at the history of Darlington during the First World War.

Research areas include the Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital at Woodside and the role of the Society of Friends at the time.

Once the research is complete, Durham at War project staff will train up the volunteers to upload their work on to the website.

No experience of historical research or website administration is needed.

Durham County Council was awarded £475,100 by the Heritage Lottery Fund last year to set up Durham at War, which is a partnership venture by Durham County Record Office, the council’s archaeology service and the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery.
