AS the chair of Darlington’s Neighbourhood Watch prepares to step down, residents are warned to use the scheme or lose it.

When Sandra Phipps took up position in January 2014, she was determined to carry on the legacy of former chair, Jim Allen.

Under Mr Allen’s leadership membership of the scheme doubled and Ms Phipps pledged to continue his good work by attempting to ensure 50 per cent of Darlington households signed up.

Just over a year later Ms Phipps is preparing to step down, citing widespread apathy and a lack of volunteers as the reason she feels unable to continue.

She said: “I took over from Jim because I would not see this fold.

“I was full of enthusiasm but gradually that has suffered because I just can’t do this on my own and it’s not right that I should.

“We’re not getting the help and support that’s needed and the scheme’s vital to keeping the community safe.”

Mr Allen, now the North-East’s national Neighbourhood Watch representative, rallied behind Ms Phipps.

He took to social media this week to say the lack of support could result in the end of the local association.

He said: “The support for Sandra at roadshows, association meetings and other events has been a disappointment.

“If this does not improve then there is a real chance the association will not have a future.”

Describing the work done by the association so far as “outstanding”, he said the organisation had helped to bring down crime in the borough and has brought communities closer together.

Urging local residents to step forward, show support and get involved with the scheme Mr Allen added: “To continue with the success the association has achieved, we urgently need volunteers to come forward who can give a couple of hours of their time every now and again at events and indeed, to serve on the committee.

“Please do not allow the association to fall into decline – it has done some outstanding work and achieved so much.”

The next meeting of Darlington’s Neighbourhood Watch Association will take place at St Cuthbert’s Church Hall on Thursday, March 19 from 6.30pm.
