A DARLINGTON Scout group is holding its principal event next month as part of year-long centenary celebrations.

The 8th Darlington Scout group is throwing open its doors and inviting the public to visit its headquarters at 80 Cockerton Green on April 11.

On the day, Darlington’s Mayor, Councillor Gerald Lee will officially open a new museum specially created to mark the scout group’s centenary.

The museum displays archive log book entries and models made by scouts over the last 100 years to give a unique insight into the group’s history.

There will also be a camp ‘kitchen’ in the garden area, plus fete stalls and light refreshments available.

Other events taking place throughout the year to mark the Cockerton scouts centenary include weekend camps, an evening celebration, a centenary photograph involving past and present members and a garden fete in June with a replica 1915 scout camp.

A spokesman said: “We have been planning the celebrations for over a year now, and hopefully we have captured in the range of celebrations and events a little of what makes the group so special and the influence it has made to the hundreds and hundreds of children and adults it has had through the doors over the years.”

The open day runs from 11am to 3pm.
