ONE of Darlington's greatest heritage assets has been put on "virtual loan" to the British Museum as part of an online teaching resource.

In it’s 190th year, Locomotion No 1, based at Head of Steam – Darlington Railway Museum, in North Road, is one of only four objects chosen from the North East to be part of the project.

The resource, Teaching History with 100 Objects, is a series of free online resources for teachers, each based around a museum object which connects with key elements of the new history national curriculum for England.

It uses object based learning to enable a wide understanding of British and world history to support the history curriculum at primary and secondary schools.

A spokeswoman for Darlington Borough Council, which runs Head of Steam, said: "This shows how important Locomotion No 1 is to our history. Each online resource includes information, teaching ideas, images and links to video and other media. Schools who want their pupils to see the real thing should contact the museum."
