TRIBUTES have been paid to a devoted mother and grandmother who helped hundreds of pupils during her two decades working in a Darlington school.

Ellaine McCoy, 57, joined St Bede’s Primary School as a volunteer teaching assistant in 1991 but such was her passion for the role, she completed a teaching course with distinction and went on to work in specialist roles including Higher Level Teaching and special needs.

She became an integral part of the St Bede’s community, putting her artistic talents to good use by running after school sewing classes.

Her shock death on Boxing Day after suffering a brain aneurysm several days earlier has left her family and friends devastated.

Husband John described Mrs McCoy as his ‘soul-mate and great friend’ who was passionate about her family and career.

He said: “Ellaine inspired many people and when in doubt she defaulted to kindness.

“She had a very caring selfless nature and was always helpful to everyone.

“Ellaine touched the lives of many people and made her family and friends proud.”

Originally from Peterlee, Mrs McCoy moved to Darlington in 1990 when John won a promotion with his employer, Prudential.

She became involved in the Catholic community, volunteering at the Catholic Care shop in Darlington town centre, and fully embraced her work at St Bede’s RC Primary School.

A spokeswoman for the school paid tribute to her dedication, saying the school was shocked and saddened to lose a valued friend and colleague.

She added: “Ellaine was dedicated to her job and thoroughly enjoyed working with the children.

“She was a highly experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant who carried out her role with great professionalism.

“She was also a very creative member of staff and generously shared her talents and enthusiasm. Many pupils have enjoyed her after-school sewing classes.

“Both past and present staff said it was a pleasure and a privilege to have known her and worked with her.

“She will be greatly missed.”

Mrs McCoy also leaves behind sons Bryan and Robert, and a two-year-old grandson Charlie with whom Mr McCoy said she shared ‘a special bond.'

Her funeral takes place at St Thomas Aquinas RC Church on Tuesday (January 13), followed by a private cremation.

Mr McCoy wished to thank the paramedics and staff at both Darlington Memorial and James Cook hospitals for their treatment of Ellaine during her short illness.
