HURWORTH parish councillors have voted unanimously to lobby Darlington Council to turn the village’s Westfield Drive into a 20mph zone.
Concerns had been raised that motorists do not adhere to the existing 30mph limit on the residential road which gets busy with child pedestrians from Hurworth Primary School.
At a meeting of Hurworth Parish Council on Thursday night, ward councillor Joe Kelley said feedback he had received from residents suggested that traffic calming measures such as speed bumps were deeply unpopular.
However, parish council chair Tony Winnett clarified that it was never the council’s intention to lobby for speed humps, merely to press for a 20mph limit to be introduced.
He said: “I propose that we make a formal approach for that road to be made a 20mph limit – without traffic calming measures and without speed humps.”
His fellow parish councillors agreed and the proposal will now be given to Darlington Council’s highways department for consideration.
