YOUNG tennis players have bounced back from defeat to represent the region in a national competition.
The Hummersknott Academy under 15 boys tennis team, featuring James Souter, Daniel Smart, and Andrew McBride, all 15, and Jamie O’Brien, 14, will represent Durham and Cleveland in the National Schools’ Cup.
The Darlington team won the County Durham Schools’ A league after beating Durham Johnstone and Barnard Castle School, before beating Cleveland league winners, Egglescliffe School, with five sets to one.
Their next match will be against either Yorkshire or Cumbria and will take place in September.
PE teacher Alasdair Tatham said: “To get through to the next stage is a great achievement for the boys, especially as they were disappointed to be narrowly beaten at this stage last year.
“They have met some high quality opposition along the way, but have always played excellent tennis. We wish them every success for the match in September.”
