A PAIR of heroin addicts admitted stealing more than £100 worth of goods from a Darlington supermarket.
Lucy Brack, 21, and Lee Roberts, 31, of Cumberland Street, appeared at Darlington Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Thursday, October 10) after being caught leaving Morrison’s on North Road with a trolley full of goods worth £135.
An upright vacuum cleaner was among the items the pair stole from the store on September 24, but the goods were later recovered.
Roberts admitted to a second theft offence of stealing a head lice comb from Rowlands Pharmacy on September 23.
In addition, he asked for a third theft to be taken into account after he was caught stealing a bike from Prebend Row on October 3.
After standing the case down for reports, the probation service told the court that the couple were trying to sustain a £50 a day heroin habit despite having their benefits stopped due to missed appointments.
They recommended the couple would benefit from a drug rehabilitation programme because their addictions were the root of their offending.
Magistrates agreed and imposed a 12-month community order on Roberts with a nine-month drug rehabilitation requirement.
He was also ordered to pay £119.80 in court charges and compensation.
Brack was given a six-month community order with a six-month drug rehabilitation requirement and told to pay a £60 victim surcharge.
