MEMBERS attending the October meeting of Darlington Flower Club were disappointed that the demonstrator that had been booked was unable to come. After a certain amount of panic, some members made a quick dash to a nearby supermarket to buy some flowers and accessories to make an impromptu demonstration. Jane Currie then proceeded to give a demonstration which was enjoyed by everyone. They were both thanked and congratulated for saving the day. The open meeting of the club has been arranged for November 6 and will take place at Hummersknott School. Doors will open at 6.30pm. The demonstration, by John Chennell from Wellingborough entitled ‘In Festive Mood’ will begin at 7.30 pm. There will be a selection of stalls selling festive goodies. Tickets are available, priced, £8 by calling 01325-374732, or can be purchased at the door. There is free parking in the school grounds.

CLUB’S PLEA: Heighington AFC Boys is seeking to bolster its management and coaching team, and is looking for someone who is interested in getting involved with youth football, or has in experience in football coaching. APPLE SALE: So prolific has been this year’s fruit crop and such is the demand from the public for home produced, quality fruit that Hummersknott Allotments and Smallholdings Association Ltd is holding a second Apple Sale on Saturday (October 12). The first sale, held last month, sold out, but holders have picked more fruit. Entry is free and the sale runs from 11am to 1pm. Access to the allotments is via Edinburgh Drive, opposite the Model T pub.

YOUTH CLUB: The first Rotakids club in Darlington has been inaugurated at Corporation Road School. Darlington Rotary members and the Rotary District Governor, Dave Sadler, visited the school to present the Charter document, which was received by on behalf of the school by Taylor Ryder. Rotakids are linked to Rotary Clubs across the country and are a way for children aged 12 and under to engage in activities that will make a positive difference in their school, in their local community and globally. Corporation Road school Rotakids, which has more than 30 members, has already raised money jointly for the Dogs Trust and Christian Aid.

DOG MOTS: Dog owners in Darlington are invited to bring their animals along for a free health check from the PDSA next week. The charity’s mobile pet check vehicle will be in the area between October 15 and 18. It will be at the following locations from 9am to 4pm: Maidendale House, Burnside Road, on Tuesday; North Lodge Park on Wednesday; B&M car park, in Meynell Road, on Thursday and Asda car park, off Haughton Road, on Friday. Vets will examine the weight, body-shape, teeth, eyes, coat and general fitness of canine visitors, and will also offer free expert advice about how to care for other pets. Dogs Trust will be providing free microchipping.
