VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help keep an historic Darlington park thriving into the future.

In 1853 South Park was the first Victorian park of its kind to open in the North East

The Friends volunteers who now help tend the grounds are keen to recruit younger members to keep the landmark park vibrant.

John Throw, chairman of the Friends of South Park, said: “The present committee has been in place for about ten years and we are looking for new ideas of what the public generally wants and how they would like to see the park develop.”

Funding has already been secured to install three pieces of gym equipment in the park this summer and Mr Throw said the Friends group is always open to suggestions of how to further improve the area.

Anybody interested in joining the Friends committee can go along its next meeting at the education centre in the park at 7pm on Wednesday, March 20.

The Friends group also meets at the park at 10am on the first Saturday of every month for a gardening session where tools are provided and all are welcome to join in.
