AN amateur music society has revealed plans of a show to celebrate its 65th anniversary.

The Consett-based CBS Musical and Stage Society will mark the occasion with a six-day production of My Fair Lady.

The society will stage the popular musical at The Empire Theatre, in Consett, from Monday, June 14 to Saturday, June 19.

The CBS, which was formed in 1945, consists of members of the community from Consett, Blackhill and Shotley Bridge.

Spokesperson Virginia Aken said "This is our production to commemorate 65 years of the Society working in the community and will be the start of the 65th year celebrations which launches with a Ball in October.

"We will be inviting many of the performers, supporters and volunteers that have assisted this Society during those years and it will be an opportunity to share the memories of those times with the new membership as well as thank them for all their hard work and efforts."

Founder member, and President, Ruth Harrison added: "It’s incredible to think that we have been producing theatre, purely on a voluntary basis, for 65 years."

My Fair Lady will feature Billie Aken-Tyers, a performing arts student at New College Durham who has been a member of the society since the age of nine, in the starring role of as Eliza.

The 16-year-old recently made it to the last 50 of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s television talent show Over The Rainbow.

Tickets are £12, or £10 for concessions, and a two-for-one offer on Monday and Tuesday.
