THE GREAT North Air Ambulance has grounded one of its three helicopters due to high winds today.

Rapid response vehicles were used to treat casualties instead of the helicopter, which is based in Lang Wathby, Cumbria.

The other two, based at Durham Tees Valley Airport remained operational.

Meanwhile on the roads, it was announced this morning that A66 running through County Durham was closed to high-sided vehicles.

Durham Police issued a warning that the road was closed to such vehicles due to high winds in the area.

The household waste and recycling centre on Whessoe Road, Darlington has also been closed due to adverse weather conditions.
