I WAS delighted to see protesters at the greyhound stadium in Sunderland (Echo, May 23). It's about time that someone stood up for the thousands of greyhounds who are used, abused and discarded by the greyhound racing industry each year.

We now have the RSPCA and a Government committee calling for stricter regulation of the industry. I have another idea: we simply stop attending these events.

An enjoyable social evening can be had in other venues which don't exploit these lovely gentle creatures.

Well done to all those quiet demonstrators for having the courage of their convictions.
