THE Met Office has issued a severe weather alert for North Yorkshire and the North East for Sunday and Monday.

Forecasters have warned of rain, sleet and snow spreading east on Sunday as an Atlantic frontal system meets colder air over northern parts of the UK, and of winds gusting up to 50mph on the coast and high ground, leading to blizzard conditions.

While they predict much of the snow will turn back to rain, routes above about 300 m northern England will have a prolonged spell of snow, which will drift in the strong winds.

Frequent hail, sleet, snow showers and strong winds are expected on Monday, with up to 10cm of snow possible on higher ground.

Lightning could be an additional hazard.

A Met Office spokesman said: "The public should be aware of difficult driving conditions and the risk of disruption to transport."
