COMMUNITY-minded residents are taking to the small screen as part of month-long campaign to celebrate residents helping each other.

National Volunteers Week launches from June 1 with County Durham and Darlington volunteers being encouraged to share their experiences in a series of short videos.

Durham Police Crime and Victims’ Commissioner Ron Hogg is behind the online campaign to celebrate the region’s residents dedicated to helping others.

He said: “I really wanted to find a way to celebrate the work of ordinary people, who give up their free time to help others in their community, whilst raising the profile of what they do.

“There are so many local organisations who value the work of their volunteers, and this is one way of letting the public know of the contribution these people make to our society.”

The volunteering campaign will be hosted on Mr Hogg’s social media profiled and will include videos from criminal justice organisations, councils, charities, the voluntary sector and small community groups.

The videos are also designed to support vulnerable people and victims of crime and anti-social behaviour to signpost which groups or organisations can help them.

Mr Hogg added: “Local volunteers work in so many different ways, using their skills or life experiences to benefit others.

“Volunteers really should be recognised for the tremendous impact they make to the lives of others.”

Residents can follow the campaign and share videos on social media by searching for “DurhamPCC” on Facebook and Twitter, or by using the #DurhamDarloVolunteers
