A MAN has been charged with wounding following a stabbing in County Durham earlier this weekend.

The incident happened in Reeth Place, Newton Aycliffe, at around 6.30pm on Friday. (June 12)

The victim, a 32-year-old, was flown to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough by the Great North Air Ambulance with an abdominal injury.

Late last night detectives charged a 48-year-old local man with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article.

He was also charged with possession of class B drug cannabis.

He is currently remanded in police custody and is expected to appear before in court tomorrow. (Monday, June 15)

Detective Sergeant Graham Low, of Durham police, appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

He said: "We have identified a number of witnesses at the scene, but we are keen to speak to anyone else who may have seen anything at the time.

"There were a lot of people there.

“The air ambulance being there brought a lot of people out.

“We have quite a few names but I have no doubt there will be more out there that we need to speak to."

Det Sgt Low this morning described the injured man’s condition as stable.

He added: “The 32-year-old remains in hospital after surgery on Friday night and he is likely to remain there for a few days.”

Anyone with information should call Durham police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555111.
