POLICE have made two arrests after a man was shot in Newcastle on Saturday night.

The emergency services were called to an address on Scarborough Road in Newcastle shortly before 6pm.

The ambulance service alerted police after finding a man with gunshot wounds.

Officers attended the scene and a 32-year-old man was taken to hospital with two gun shot wounds to his leg and a minor head injury.

He remains in hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. A 37-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of possessing a prohibited weapon. They both remain in police custody.

Superintendent Mick Paterson said: "We believe that the offenders were known to the victim and this has been an isolated incident.

"There is no threat to any members of the public and extra officers will remain in the Scarborough Road area today to carry out further enquiries and offer reassurance to members of the public.

"We have two people in custody helping us with our inquiries and I'd urge anyone with any information to contact police as soon as possible."

Despite the arrests, police are still appealing for anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and who witnessed any suspicious people or vehicles to contact police.
