POLICE are warning people not to give out bank details over the phone, after a spate of so-called phishing scams.
Telephone fraudsters are calling people at home and asking them to move large amounts of money from their own bank accounts to other accounts for “safe keeping”.
Chief Inspector Neil Robson, of Northumbria Police, said anyone who notices anything suspicious should call the police.
“A bank would never contact a member of the public in this way and ask them to transfer cash,” he said.
“We want to make it clear that anyone who calls claiming to be from a bank and asking people for bank details or to make a transfer or such a request is clearly a fraudster.
“Anyone who receives such a call should put the phone down and contact the police straightaway, preferable using another phone.”
To speak to the police, call the non-emergency number 101.
