A TEENAGE boy, who sparked an emergency operation, after climbing into a Darlington river was found safe and well at home.

Police were called at around 4pm today (Tuesday, October 7) to reports of someone lying in the River Skerne near St Cuthbert’s Way.

Fire crews and ambulances were also called after witnesses said the person appeared to be unconscious under a bridge and was not moving.

Following a search of the river, a mobile phone was recovered which was traced back to a teenager who was later found to be safe and well at home.

Inspector Chris Knox, of Darlington Police, said the teenager admitted he had been in the river and had left his mobile phone. He said a witness also reported seeing him climb out of the river and walk off.
