A NORTH-East authority is forecasting an underspend of £2.973m this year.

Durham County Council said the underspend amounts to 0.7 per cent of its total budget of £408.6m.

Deputy leader Cllr Alan Napier said: “There is a fine line between underspending and overspending.

“Our approach is prudent and in the best interests of local people in the county.”

The underspend has been transferred to general contingency funds, including £0.5m to cover the cost of schools’ redundancies.

Last year, the council made cuts of about £23m.
