CANVASSERS working to update the electoral register will be visiting homes over the coming weeks.

Durham County Council is in the final phase of its annual review of the register of voters, which involves visits to all properties which have not yet responded to written requests to update their details.

The authority says it is important that residents respond even if the information contained on the register is unchanged if they wish to be included on the 2017 electoral register.

People who are not listed on the register will not be able to vote in elections, including the county and parish council elections due to take place next May.

The authority is warning residents that staff will be visiting homes across the county over the next few weeks.

Official canvassers ,who wear ID badges that are visible at all times, can help members of the public complete their forms.
