WITH elections and a referendum on the horizon, Darlington residents are being encouraged to register to vote.
On Thursday, May 5 voters will go to the polls to elect a Police and Crime Commissioner for County Durham and Darlington.
A referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union is scheduled for Thursday, June 23.
In light of both events, the Electoral Commission has launched a campaign to encourage people to register to vote before the deadline of Monday, April 18.
Darlington Borough Council (DBC) is also urging residents to sign up for the right to cast their vote.
Luke Swinehoe, electoral registration officer for DBC, said: “Time is now running out to make sure you can take part in these elections.
“I’d encourage everyone in Darlington to take action now if they’re not already registered to vote.”
Ben Brook, head of the Electoral Commission for the English regions, added: “Research shows that young people, students and recent home movers are less likely to be registered to vote.
“If you’re not registered, you won’t be able to have your say on issues that directly affect your day-to-day life in Darlington.”
To register, visit gov.uk/register-to-vote or call 01325 406444.
