A DISTRESSED woman threatening to jump off a North-East bridge was rescued by the emergency services and members of the public.
Northumbria Police were called to reports of the woman climbing over safety railings on the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland at 7.30pm tonight.
Officers called in the RNLI, Sunderland Coastguard, fire fighters and paramedics.
When emergency crews arrived, they found members of the public holding onto the woman, preventing her from jumping into the River Wear, 100ft below.
Fire fighters kitted up in rope rescue equipment before climbing over the railings to secure the woman.
She was pulled back to safety by fire fighters and police officers.
Sunderland RNLI helmsman Anthony Jobling said: "Thankfully the emergency services were able to bring this incident to a swift and successful conclusion with fire fighters using their specialist rope rescue equipment to haul the women back over the railings to safety."
