VISITORS to York Minster are being greeted with the unexpected sight of an immaculate green lawn.

More than 1,500sq metres of grass carpet has been laid in the nave of the cathedral, one of Europe’s most famous buildings.

It was installed to celebrate the diamond jubilee and the Minster Rose Dinner, which will be held tomorrow. About 900 guests are expected to attend the event, which will help raise funds for the conservation and restoration of the building.

The grass was grown in felt made from recycled British textiles and was developed by York-based turf specialist Lindum.

Stephen Fell, managing director of Lindum, said: “I’m a big supporter of the Minster and the fundraising team who tirelessly raise money to maintain its beauty and splendour for everyone.

“The grass carpet will, I hope, create an incredible experience for the many guests attending this very special evening.”
