PHIL Mustard hit Durham’s fastest one-day century off 66 balls, only to get out to the next one when he walked across and lost his leg stump to Andy Carter.

Durham had looked on course to beat their record 40-over total of 325 after being put in by Nottinghamshire, but they lost momentum for 12 overs after Mustard’s exit.

Dale Benkenstein, resuming the captaincy in his first one-day appearance of the season, then went in to score 39 not out off only 19 balls as he and Paul Collingwood took the final total to 310 for four.

They added 60 off the final 31 balls with Collingwood hitting a huge six over square leg in his unbeaten 25.

The fastest century record had belonged to Collingwood since 2004, when he reached his hundred off 72 balls at Worcester.

Mustard and Mark Stoneman put on 183 inside 23 overs for the first wicket, but then departed in successive overs with Stoneman going first for 72 when he holed out at long-on.

The rate dropped while Ben Stokes and Gordon Muchall settled in. While the first ten overs had yielded 77 runs and the next ten 85, it dropped to 65 between the 20th and 30th, then only 23 came off the next five.

Muchall was twice guilty of facing three successive dot balls and after Stokes holed out at long-off for 23 Muchall followed suit for 34.

It meant two new men were at the crease for the last five overs in Collingwood and Benkenstein, but despite his lack of four-day form the one-day captain showed he had lost none of his striking power.
