ROCK ‘n’ roll music sounded out over the school playground in Croft-on-Tees, near Darlington, as children learned to Jive as part of a jubilee street party event today.
The older children from Croft C of E Primary decorated the playground with bunting and paperchains before the event.
Then staff, children, parents and governors from Croft and visiting children from Ravensworth Primary School enjoyed a picnic lunch, followed by cupcakes made by all the school, which when put together made up a Union Jack flag.
The children were all dressed in 1950s clothes and enjoyed playground games from the era, including oranges and lemons, hopscotch and boules, before taking part in crown making, painting portraits of the Queen, cooking Coronation chicken, and learning how to Jive.
They also learned about the Commonwealth and the Coronation in 1953 through powerpoint presentations from the school’s ICT club and rounded the day off by singing the National Anthem.
Teacher Jenny Rasbeary said: “Children from both schools learned about and appreciated the significance of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that this weekend brought.
“They feel they have played a small part in what will be a worldwide celebration - whilst having a huge amount of fun.”
