A GAS engineer who was among six people hurt in an explosion at a house in Gateshead last night is expected to be released from hospital shortly.

Three police officers were among those injured at the property above the River Tyne in Marian Court.

One of the officers suffered serious burns to his face in the blast which ripped the roof and front off the single-storey home.

The six also included a paramedic and the elderly occupant of the house.

Northern Gas Networks said the engineer - who was inside the property at the time of the explosion - was due to leave hospital later today after being treated for flash burns to his hands and face. His protective clothing prevented more serious injury.

A spokeswoman said: "We have spoken with him and he is doing OK. We will give him all the support he needs over the coming weeks and months.

"Our engineer showed bravery and quick-thinking and we wish him a speedy recovery."
