IN what would have been a perfect compliment to Lady Gaga’s infamous raw meat dress, a York race-goer stepped out in a Yorkshire Pudding and asparagus outfit yesterday.

Nobody could argue that Rhonda Morritt’s dress was not the latest season when she wowed the crowds at York Racecourse modelling a dress made from lettuce and asparagus, topped off with a Yorkshire Pudding and a turnip fascinator.

The North Yorkshire asaparagus-grower was championing locally produced food at the racecourse, for the start of the Dante Festival.

York Racecourse Hospitality commissioned the creation from dressmaker and designer Charlotte Miles and Jennifer Middleton, to celebrate its commitment to local produce.

Mrs Morritt grows 12 acres of asparagus from her 300-acre farm near Sand Hutton, on the outskirts of York, with her husband Richard.

Nick Fazackerley, from hospitality section, said the unpredictable weather had this year caused difficulties for chefs trying to source the quantities of local food needed.

He said: “Asparagus in particular has been hard fought for as the crop has been slow coming to market. It’s important that we continue to support Yorkshire’s farmers and producers, particularly when the weather plays havoc with the supply chain.”

The Dante Festival continued today and finishes tomorrow.
