A YOUNG woman has died after crashing off the A1 in North Yorkshire this morning and hitting a tree.
The accident happened at 5.45am on the southbound carriageway near Catterick.
Police said a blue Peugeot 206 car left the carriageway before hitting a tree and landing upside down in a field next to the road.
The only person in the car was a 27-year-old woman, believed to be local, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The southbound carriageway remained closed until just after 11.30am following the collision.
Traffic Sergeant John Lumbard, of North Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Group, said: “I am appealing to anyone who was travelling on this stretch of the A1 around the time of the collision to contact North Yorkshire Police as soon as possible.”
Anyone who can help officers establish the circumstances surrounding the collision is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for John Lumbard.
