A HEALTHCARE assistant at a renal unit is training for a trek along the Great Wall of China to raise awareness of kidney failure.
Deborah Cooper, of Sowerby, Thirsk, said she had been inspired to walk 80kms across the ancient monument after witnessing her patients’ courage when visiting Harrogate District Hospital.
She said thoughts of her patients’ determination would keep her going as she tackled one of the fortification’s steepest sections, the Stairway to Heaven, during the seven-day hike.
Miss Cooper said: “One of the things I really enjoy about my job is that we get to know the patients really well, and see how dialysis impacts on their lives and how transplants make an amazing difference.
“As well as raising the profile of kidney disease, I want to help fund new treatments and improve quality of life for renal patients.”
The 25-year-old is aiming to raise £3,100 for Kidney Research UK before the trek in September by holding a fundraising meal at the Black Lion, Thirsk, on Thursday, making lace bookmarks and running a marathon exercise session at Thirsk Leisure Centre on May 20.
