A JAPANESE Akita dog, which jumped from a first floor window in Sunderland, impaled itself on a wrought iron fence.
Fire crews had to be called to the property in Springwell, Washington, Tyne and Wear at just after 6.30pm last night.
Fire service personnel placed a line around the dog’s neck and tied it up against the fence in order to ensure the safety of both the dog and themselves. Cutting equipment was used to cut through the fence to enable them to remove the spike from the animal’s upper hind rear right leg.
“The dog was released into the custody of the police who conveyed him to PDSA suffering from minor bleeding to the leg,” a spokeswoman for Tyne and Wear fire and rescue said.
“A short extension ladder was used to secure a first floor window as a second dog had been located in the property.”
