Three generations of the same family were rescued today by Sunderland RNLI lifeboat volunteers after their 32ft fishing vessel suffered engine failure close to Roker Pier.

The rescue mission was launched at 10:50am when the crew issued an emergency VHF radio call alerting the coastguard to the fact that their vessel was drifting after suffering engine failure.

Sunderland RNLI launched their Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Wolseley within ten monutes with four volunteers aboard and the stricken vessel was quickly found.

Clive Fallon, Helmsman at Sunderland RNLI said: "Thankfully there was very little wind; so the vessel was not drifting too far.

"We transferred one of our volunteer crew to the stricken vessel to assist with the setting up of the tow.'

After establishing a tow; the crew - a father, son, and grandson from Redhouse, Sunderland - and their boat were taken in tow back to the slipway at Sunderland Marina.
