A BRAVE young schoolboy needs help to walk freely for the first time.

Four-year-old Thomas Brennan suffers from spastic diplegic cerebral palsy, leaving him in constant pain and unable to walk more than a few steps at a time.

Confined to a wheelchair or even a pushchair, the youngster is unable to run or play with friends.

But medics believe a groundbreaking operation could set him free.

But the surgery must be performed in the US and would cost £48,000.

Last night, Thomas’ tearful mother, Jodie Bussey, made an emotional plea for help in raising the cash.

Miss Bussey, from Ushaw Moor, near Durham City, said: “It’s heartbreaking. He can’t play with the other girls and boys. He tries his hardest, but if he tries to run, he falls over.

“He gets very upset and cries a lot. He’s starting to segregate himself from other children and does not want to go to school.

“We don’t want to beg, but we have to because this is the only way of getting what’s best for Thomas, what he deserves – the best possible chance in life.”

Thomas was born nearly ten weeks early by emergency Caesarean section. His condition, known as Little’s disease, was diagnosed at 16 months old.

The operation, which involves cutting into the spine and severing the nerve, causing spasticity in the legs, was first performed in the UK earlier this year and the NHS often refuses to fund it. It is more regularly carried out in the US.

However, the cost of Thomas and his mother travelling to the US for surgery, and the month’s rehabilitation required, would cost about £48,000.

The St Joseph’s RC Primary School pupil would also need intensive therapy once back home.

The surgery works best if carried out before a child reaches six, which for Thomas would be March 2013.

Since the fundraising appeal was launched on Wednesday, nearly £1,000 has been pledged.

Miss Bussey, 29, said: “Thomas calls his legs his ‘crazy legs’. He just understands that if he goes to America, his crazy legs would get fixed.”
