NEW Marske’S Great Britain international, Mark Shaw, won the junior men’s title and Gateshead Harrier Kate Waugh the under-13 girls’ crown in the North of England Cross Country Championships at Pontefract.

Shaw, who helped Great Britain win the junior team gold medals in the European Cross Country Championships in Slovenia last month, beat Liverpool Pembroke’s Merseyside champion Toby Loveridge by a comfortable nine seconds, while Waugh enjoyed a five-seconds winning margin.

North-East athletes picked up two other individual medals, with Gateshead’s Markhim Lonsdale finishing second in the under-15 boys and Birtley’s Lydia Turner taking the under-15 girls’ bronze medal. Mandale Harriers, led home by Joseua Allen in 16th place, won the under- 13 boys’ team bronze medals.

Last year’s senior women’s bronze medallist, Durham City Harrier Rosie Smith, finished fourth, while former Sunderland Harrier Patrick Martin, now competing for Stockport, was third in the senior men’s 12K.
