A COMPANY director who sped past police in his supercharged Jaguar at an astonishing 147mph was yesterday banned from the roads for nine months and ordered to pay £1,365.

Owen Swift, 68, who was clocked on the A64 near Malton, North Yorkshire, told the officers who chased him for almost four miles that he expected no more than a ticking off.

He denied speeding but was found guilty by Scarborough magistrates.

The court heard that he refused to get out of his Jaguar XKR coupe, telling police: "That's it. This is going to crease me. You could have just given me a bollocking. At my age that's my livelihood."

Swift, of Kensington Court, Dringhouses, York, who runs a manufacturing company in Castleford, claimed he left Malton travelling at no more than 60mph.

He said the first he knew anything was wrong was when he saw the police Audi A4 in his mirror.

Swift was fined £700 with £650 costs and a £15 admin fee. He received six penalty points which were added to six points already on his licence. Under the totting up procedure, he was banned from driving for nine months.

Traffic Sergeant John Clayton who captured the offence, said: "This is the worst case of excessive speed I have ever seen in 26 years of policing.

"Swift's disregard for his own safety and the safety of other road users beggars belief, the potential consequences of such shocking driving do not bear thinking about."
