'Stressed' killer cleared of attack on guards in Durham's Frankland Prison

NOT GUILTY: Kevan Thakrar NOT GUILTY: Kevan Thakrar

A TRIPLE murderer has been cleared of stabbing three North-East prison officers after he claimed to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) caused by his previous prison experiences.

Last night, the brother of one of the officers injured at Frankland Prison, near Durham, branded the jury’s decision an “absolute disgrace”

to every serviceman and woman who has suffered PTSD while serving their country.

Lee Wylde spoke out after killer Kevan Thakrar, who admitted stabbing his brother Craig Wylde and fellow officers Claire Lewis and Neil Walker, was cleared of two counts of attempted murder and three of wounding with intent at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday.

Thakrar lashed out with a broken chilli bottle in selfdefence as he feared he was about to be attacked, the court heard.

Mr Wylde, himself a former serviceman who suffers from PTSD, said: “It’s an absolute disgrace – unbelievable.

“This is the week of Remembrance Day. This is an embarrassment and a disgrace to every single serviceman and woman who’s been in a disaster, genuinely suffers from PTSD and tries to live their lives normally. It’s as if it’s the officers’ own fault.”

Dave Thompson, who retired as Frankland governor last month and was in charge when the incident happened, said: “Staff at Frankland and elsewhere across the service will feel let down, dismayed and humiliated by part of the criminal justice system in which they serve.

“They deserve better recognition and they deserve better support than we have seen from the outcome of this case.”

He added that the injured officers were decent people made to feel like they themselves have been on trial.

Mr Walker was a hero for saving Ms Lewis from worse injuries by tackling Thakrar but Mr Wylde and Ms Lewis would not work in the prison service again, he added.

Mr Thomspon added that prison officers’ work required the highest level of professionalism, courage and conviction which was “often unseen and under-reported”: “In this case, other criminal justice professionals have been amazed by how professional and restrained they were in dealing with the assailant immediately after the incident.”

Thakrar was serving at least 35 years of a life sentence for the drug-related murder of three men and the attempted murder of two women in Bishops Stortford with his brother, Miran, in 2007 when he lashed out with a 285ml glass sauce container in Frankland, in March last year.

Prosecutors claimed Thakrar, now 24, was acting with murderous intent.

But jurors heard he was suffering from PTSD following previous “prison experiences”

including an alleged heavy beating by off-duty prison officers at Woodhill prison, in Milton Keynes, in 2008.

A jury took eight hours and 15 minutes to clear him of all charges.

Judge Mr Justice Simon expressed sympathy for the injured guards, saying it was not part of the defence case that they had brought their injuries on themselves.

In a statement, Thakrar said he was deeply sorry for his actions but claimed he was a victim of the prison system and wrongly imprisoned.

He called for “urgent scrutiny of the appalling treatment and abuse which mounts to nothing short of torture” in English prisons.

A week after the attack by Thakrar, who was transferred to Wakefield prison, Soham killer Ian Huntley had his neck slashed by a fellow Frankland inmate, Damien Fawkes.

Fawkes went on to murder convicted paedophile Colin Hatch in a cell at Full Sutton Prison in February.

An absolute disgrace and as rightly pointed an affront to all service personell. We seem to be in a ludicrous situation now where its the victims who are put on trial not the offenders. If this animal thinks "he was suffering from PTSD following previous “prison experiences” he should be sent to a foreign jail and see how they compare! So this scum can now do the same wherever he goes and blame in PTSD! As Ive always maintained our so called "justice" system is pathetic and defends these animals. Millions of people have lost all faith in our criminal system. When will they learn people like him have no rights.

The jury members saw pictures of Kevan Thakrar taken after the savage beating he received from prison officers at Frankland prison, of course these pictures are not printed for the public to see and it will be also intersting to know if anyone at HMP Frankland be charged with section 18 for the beating Kevan Thakrar got.

Would it be possible to make contact with Mr Craig Wylde? I would be very interested in speaking with him.

The jury will have heard a great deal more than we have read in the newspaper.
How can we know what prisoners life is like in these places?
There must be a tiny percentage of prisoners without any goodness in them at all. They need to be taught to read and write. Heaven only knows what sort of homes they came from as growing kiddies.
If a jury consists of 12 citizens they must have valid reasons for their verdict.
I only hope this young man is helped to re-educate himself and given the medical help he needs. If you ill treat an animal it will eventually be a shivering wreck who will bite.
The jurors have probably sat through reams of evidence so we cannot make comments unless we know everything, rather like kids who give one side of an argument to their parents. There are ALWAYS two sides.

Only hope this young man is able to re-educate himself? And given medical help that he needs? How many more lives will he have to ruin before society say enough is enough! Barbara states if you ill treat an animal it will eventually be a shivering wreck who will bite! If an animal kills 3 people and attempts to kill others it would be euthanized, period! Prisoners, like him, get treated very well and have opportunities given to them on a plate day in day out which they choose to throw back in the face of society. Unlike law abiding victims!

Prisoners in UK prisons have more rights and get better treatment than many elderly people in care homes and vulnerable people in our communities. This is fact and has been reported on many occasions; there is strict legislation in place for prisoners which has to be adhered to, not the same for the above.

Here we go again, the poor misunderstood prisoner, uneducated and from a disadvantaged back ground, that doesn't give him the right to murder three people and have a load of do-gooders who don't know anything about him back him up. Please refer to the facts, he's in prison for a reason, he was the scum of society but now he's locked up away from the rest of us, being paid for by the working people of the UK including the prison guards he has attacked.

Its clear that the sensationalists on here did not see the the pictures of this prisoner or heard all the evidence. I applaud the Jury for basing their verdict on FACT! So who assaulted the prisoner,? will charges be brought against those brave PO's who assaulted him, nahh they will get together and lie, (he must have slipped in the showers)...and NO i have never "done time"!

@ antihypocrisy. The case was not about if the prisoner got assaulted, the case was about the assault he carried out on 3 Officers who were doing a very tough job. I for one am not a sensationalist, but i feel very very strongly that the jury got this decision wrong. How, when he chased an Officer, stabbing her and shouting i'm going to f***ing kill her can that be classed as self-defense? The decision taken by that jury was an dark dark day for the British Judicial system!

antihypocrisy, the case of whether or not the prisoner was assaulted or not is not part of the trial, so i put it to you that it is you who is the sensationalists. If you would like to discuss that im sure you would be very free to open a new forum somewhere. But on this one i think it would be better to stick to the point of trial and they are that he did assault, by stabbing and slashing 3 Officers. I fully appreciate your view, but i know you are wrong.

Some strong comments for and against for this case. I have seen first hand the abuse and goading that prisoners dish out to officers and I have yet to see or hear of any prisoner given any type of "rough justice" many many years have passed since that was acceptable. Nearly every prison has cameras on every landing covering all angles. The officers attacked did not deserve their attack they are just human like you or I, not animals in a uniform. So if they deserved it because of the way he was treated what goes for the 3 men he murdered and the 2 women he attempted to murder apparently where children were present. Did they deserve what he did to them. He got 35 years for a triple murder not pinching sweets. And he can't handle his punishment and again attacked 3 people, seems a pattern is emerging here. All of you can judge these members of staff, but can you say you would approach their attacker without fear? No unlikely isnt it! Maybe if it was your husband/wife/son/dau
ghter you would feel differently but no you jump on the poor prisoner bandwagon. I have worked with some of the most dedicated people in the whole of our public service and at 3am when a prisoner is screaming " I hope your children die in a car crash" then an hour later you are comforting them because they are upset, takes a special kind of person. So before you judge pull on a uniform and try it.

Why do we take any notice of these cases or Court decisions. No one takes the slightest interest in our views, no one who can 'do something cares a jot'. So let him out, let him kill again, let him exercise his Right To Kill over and over again. Let him have Sky TV in his cell, extra eggs for breakfast, trips to Kenya to develop his social skills, and do not ever mention slipping a rope around his neck and dropping him from a beam - that's barbaric. Join the MUGS CLUB UK, be a founder member, send him a food parcel, welcome him to your neighbourhood, you voted Labour, YOU voted Conservative, you voted Liberal so he's your responsibility. Me, I've never voted for over 20 years, never will and include me out of this West End Farce.

My brother is craig wylde the officers that "he" nearly murdered! All your comments of the people on here that the jury sat through "all" the evidence etc and came to a fair decision is complete rubbish, A LOT of evidence that would have shown what this evil thing done was not shown for some reason! He is a vile person that is already guilty of murder and attempted murder, his terrible wounds he recieved at frankland? Are these the wounds that the cctv, photos, and an independent monitoring board show never existed? Or are you talking about the lip he had a little cut on then tried to smear the blood up his face?? If your going to comment then comment on fact he was guilty as the day is long, he knew that when he walked out laughing to his dad!

Its interesting that it was three he attacked (in self defence) I mean the "brave" PO's wouldn't dream of sorting him out on their own would they.

The minor injuries he had, which you sensationalise as a wounding, were received when he was restrained. If you know of a way to restrain a violent, armed man intent on causing you fatal injuries with out causing some injuries then I suggest you sell it. Law enforcement agencies would pay a fortune. Remember that Thakrar managed to slash Officer Walker across the face and back of the head whilst being restrained. He resisted those attempts at restraint most violently and continued to do so until several officers restrained him. The whole incident is on CCTV and was, quite correctly seen as lawful minimum force. The website you mention in your later posts is nothing more than a disguised propaganda site. It makes mention of hearsay evidence and joint enterprise. The hearsay evidence were the confessions that Miran Thakrar had made to numerous people whilst on the run in Cyprus, namely that he and his brother Kevan had killed people of a drug deal. If you and another go to a house , armed with guns and knives, shoot three people and stab two others then you are both guilty. That's joint enterprise.

Look at some of the witnesses Thakrar called to give evidence. Most were prisoners who did not witness the offence and offered no evidence on his state of mind. The case was hijacked and used to voice complaint after complaint against the prison service. Witnesses included a terrorist in jail for planning to lure a soldier to an address and then behead him ( and he complains of racism) a previous member of the BNP who has converted to Muslim in prison ( because he feared for his life and will do anything to appease his brothers). It should also be mentioned that Miran Thakrar converted to Muslim whilst at Frankland but when moved to another converted back to Hindu, saying he had been radicalised by extremists. Racism is thriving in prison, but not by Officers, it's the inmates. Who stands to benefit from the criticism made during this trial-the inmates. Once society removes the powers and protection provided to the men and women who contain and control the worst aspects of humanity then they really do let the lunitics run the asylum. Would any of the members of the jury give a job to Thakrar or his witnesses or like them to move in next door. I think not!!

You dont have to want to employ someone to, at the same time, appreciate they have a right to their day in Court. He did, so did the PO's and Thakrar was found NOT GUILTY!! Not by me or you or anyone else on here but by 12 OF HIS PEERS!! Get over it!

And now we have prisoners rioting in Durham jail shouting PTSD. Antihypocrosy claimed we were sensationalists when we said this would happen. His pro prisoner propaganda has been highlighted and his childish response of "get over it" shows the validity of his comments. Thakrar tried to appeal his conviction and sentence and his appeal was dismissed in 15 minutes. So it's okay for one side to question verdicts and sentences but not the other. Hardly a fair point of view.
