RUSSELL WINTER participating in the UK Pro-Surf Tour section North East Open at Tynemouth at the weekend is an inspiration to youngsters everywhere. This is his third time winning the event.

Longsands Beach at Tynemouth saw some fierce competition between Newquay’s Winter and Gordon Fontaine, the French surfer, who at one point was leading the leg.

A North wind pushed waves onto the shore towards the end of the competition and Mr. Winter took advantage of the conditions, turning into the surf with big rolling curves.

The wind direction throughout the competition changed; that and the weather combined to produce peaks of two –three feet of surf. Bright streaks of sunlight bounced off the sea.

Darlington is not very far from the coast and there are some good opportunities for those interested in personal growth and development, to take up surfing. Saltburn is a paradise for those who love to take advantage of the waves and connect with nature.

Dave Reed, the Relentless Energy Drink Super Series Tour Director said: “ The champion of the junior and the senior competition, respectively get £250 and £2000. The aim of offering a cash prize to the juniors is to entice them into the event.”

Quality of training on the water and safety is most important. The surf shops overlooking the pier at Saltburn can offer equipment as well as top class lessons.

Cost may be a consideration but instruction is surprisingly cheap. At Saltburn Surf School lessons include the hire of suits and boards. The school is accredited and instruction is for anyone over eight years old who is reasonably healthy and can swim 50 metres.

The challenge of having fun and becoming proficient at a sport that connects directly with the environment is not for the faint hearted! Contact Zoee on 07961714993 for more information about surfing.
