THE teenage victim of a one-punch attack has died ten months after he was assaulted in a nightclub.

Kristian Thompson died at a hospital in Northampton, where he had been receiving specialist treatment, in the early hours of yesterday.

The nineteen year old's death came just days after his mother had spoken of his road to recovery - and it has prompted police to announce they are to review the case against the man convicted of his attack.

Kristian, who was 18 at the time of the incident, suffered severe head injuries when he was punched as he enjoyed a drink with friends at the K2 nightclub in Consett, County Durham on September 4.

A spokesman for Durham Police said last night (sun): "Kristian's family are devastated by his death and have asked for time to come to terms with what has happened."

Kristian fell into a coma after the attack and his mother Maxine, 44, was told by doctors to "say her goodbyes".

He was left with frontal lobe damage, which affected his behaviour and personality.

Ms Thompson, 44, of Burnopfield, County Durham, said earlier this week: "When I talk about what has happened to Kristian, both that night and over the months that followed, I have to isolate myself from it otherwise I just wouldn't be able to cope."

Ms Thompson recalled getting a phone call at 2.40am to say say he was on his way to hospital.

She said: "Someone asked him for a cigarette and Kristian said he didn't have one.

"But the boy hit him when he had his hands in his pocket and he was unstable he hit his head on the step."

During a court case earlier this year, Kristian's attacker was sentenced to two years and four months' jail for the unprovoked attack after admitting causing grievous bodily harm.

The police spokesman said: "A post mortem examination will be conducted by a Home Office pathologist in due course.

"Detective Superintendent Paul Goundry of Durham Police will now be reviewing the case in conjunction with Kristian's family and Northamptonshire Police."
