AN ardent football fan has signed up for an innovative season ticket scheme from the other side of the world.

Over the past few weeks, Hartlepool United has been overwhelmed by the support to the launch of its £100 season ticket initiative.

But the club was left astonished when Tony Sweeting got in touch from Australia to apply for a season ticket - even though he knows he is unlikely to see a single game.

The avid fan is so hooked on Pools that he transformed his basement into a bar dedicated to all things blue and white.

Mr Sweeting, who lives in New South Wales, said: "This is such a great idea by the club and I really hope the town gets behind it.

"I know I won't be able to make the games but I feel it is such a brilliant gesture from Pools that I wanted to add my support.

"I'm sure people back home must think it's too good to be true, but if we get on a roll and reach the magic 4,000, then the atmosphere in the ground will be amazing - I only wish I could be there."

His gesture helped push sales towards the 900 mark on Wednesday night, with a target of 1,000 still on the radar ahead of the weekend.

Chief executive Russ Green said: "It's an unbelievable gesture from Tony and we thank him sincerely.

"This sort of thing just highlights how brilliant our fans have been since we unveiled the offer."
