OFFICERS searching the home of a man killed when a bomb exploded in his car have found a note in his flat.

The contents have not been revealed, but police made it clear he did not intend to harm anyone else.

David Bagley’s body was found early on Wednesday in the wreckage of his blue Nissan Micra, in the Old Cemetery Road area of Hartlepool.

The 58-year-old, who lived alone in a flat in Navigation Point, Hartlepool Marina, was described as a private man who volunteered in a charity shop.

On Wednesday, police cordons were set up around the vehicle and the flat where he lived.

Residents were evacuated from buildings around the marina while bomb disposal experts ensured the area was safe. It followed the discovery that Mr Bagley died as the result of a homemade bomb.

Investigations are continuing into whether the bomb was set off deliberately or if it went off accidentally.

Hartlepool district commander Superintendent Glenn Gudgeon said: “He made it clear that he meant no harm to anyone else from the actions he took.

“He was a part-time volunteer in the town, but very much kept himself to himself.”

Investigations are also continuing into the chemicals used to create the bomb. Supt Gudgeon said the contents were believed to have been bought locally.

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with his death.

The cordon around the block of flats was lifted late on Wednesday night.
